Could go with Trinnov Altitude or Datasat.more bells and whistles, more channels, more upgradeable, more $$. Sound characteristics.not sure, room eq.not sure, haven't heard them. Or McIntosh MX160: less $, likely to have considerably less channels, not upgradeable (McIntosh heritage), Room Perfect and that proven smooth, deep, solid yet airy/3d soundstage. What are your thoughts? Those that have heard the 151 vs Datasat and the Altitude, please comment. Is the proven McIntosh sound quality worth the potential short comings?
I think it's not possible to answer this as there is no announcement at the 160, no specs or features, and no published price. I do love the sound of the 151, so if it's equal or surpasses that, I'd have no issue with a 160 as long as it added additional elevation channels, some wiser bass management, hdcp 2.2 and retains room perfect.one of my issues with the Datasat (which I heard twice and did not like, but I will blame the demos at the point) is it will be a bitch to sell if I get bored and want to move on. And experiments with Dirac at home did not convince me it achieves the same success as a Room Perfect. It can be paired with a variety of McIntosh amplifiers and speakers for a complete home theater system. Great info indeed. I'm going to talk to my A/V supplier today. It would be nice if there were options for more channels, but I think this is an understandable compromise between price and feature set. A majority of systems are still 5.1, not even 7.1.
The number of us that will rip up and install wiring for two or four in ceiling speakers is likely very, very small. Even wides or things like left center, right center etc will be impossible for many to utilize at this stage.
For those that want to, they there are other options at other price points, but $14k is already quite high in a tech business where things generally get better and cheaper each year. Over several years, as people being planning new rooms from scratch with requisite wiring and space, there will be some increase in desire for more channels, but it still dramatically increases the overall investment in a home theater (processor, amps, speakers, installation, space required). Really complex theaters are probably best served by Datasat right now.
But likely 85-90% of even mid to large high end home theaters would be served by the 160, and a Datasat is probably overkill. Having said this, we might not know fully how the aux channels can be used since this is preliminary information. They do mention bi amp or additional dedicated subs, but who knows, perhaps with a firmware update, you could reassign some of them to Top or Wide usage. I am disappointed as well it's not 13.1.
Maybe its a Room Perfect limitation, but isn't the Steinway processor have more than 11.1 channels? Also it looks like no dedicated support for mutliple subs, appears to look like subs are handled like the 151. I could be wrong though. Has anyone used with success, the biamping auxiliary outputs feature on the 151 and mirrored the main front left/right? Would like to place speakers 4' above my mains on the same vertical plane.
I have been using stereo subs successfully with the MX150, which is configured the same with the MX151. It would be nice for the AUX outputs to function as dedicated LFE channels instead of resorting to a 'Y' cable on the single LFE channel of the MX150/151. Honestly, this feels like a controlled leak, likely to generate some anticipation and buzz.end of June is only a few weeks away, so it has to go public officially very soon. I doubt it would happen right away, but I hope we get a lot more clarity on - what's changed from the 151 in terms of core performance, functionality, and setup.there were a number of quirks that never got fixed over the last few months.
more details on AUX bi-amp / channel options - hdcp 2.2/HDR - any changes to on screen or web GUI - online firmware updates - ability to save and reload room perfect cals - improvement of serial status feedback - return of proper level readings in gain offsets ( this went away in later firmwares; those who never upgraded firmware wouldn't know this.) - better level setting of crossed bass energy vs LFE levels, and on a per input basis That's all for now!

Contact your local dealer to learn more. I will add a quick observation. Thanksgiving Day. We were watching the Lions and Eagles football game. Sure I have heard proper placement of the broadcast ambiences but never so clearly. My Dad and I were sitting front row.
We heard the QB talking and barking out signals like we were on the sideline. The second the ball was snapped we could hear the initial impact of pads and helmets and growls!
After the play you can hear behind you and above you the PA announcer. The crowd is all over the place. They get louder with a good or great home team play. Now here's the cool thing. During one of the time outs we could hear the stadium music perfectly clear. My Wife called down and asked if we were listening to music.
That's how clear it was coming in. My other guests made comments like who needs to go to the game when you feel like you are already there- here? It's like sitting in the owner's box with the large screen in our faces and the amazing sound from the MX160.
Boy am I anxious to get my ears on a newer firmware! Keep up the great work Chuck and McIntosh. My Review is coming along nicely and I have plenty to say about Blu ray, music, video games and Auro-3D and Atmos! More to come! Can someone confirm mx-160 has no voice of god channel?
Also confirm the aux 1-4 are the same capabilities as in mx-150/151? In other words, they are used for bi-amping and/or adding subwoofers. There is a TOP or VOG (Aux3 with latest firmware).
This is great. So you can select wides, different configurations of subs, front heights(including front height center) and top(vog) using the 4 aux. Maximum configuration for auro 3d is 7ch + 4 height + front center + vog = 13.1. Mx-160 can do this plus 2 additional aux for wides or 2 additional subs. I am in the market for a new 3D SSP currently have the Marantz 7702 but I am no longer interested in an Audyssey solution but I know nothing about the MX-160 and Room Perfect so just a couple of quick questions: I am considering, in addition to the MX160, the new Arcam units (Dirac based), the 'eventual' new Emotiva SSP 16 channels of Dirac, and if I win the lottery, the Datasat RS20i. Are the target curves adjustable?
Are trim and distance adjustable after RP does it's thing? Since there is still no (or at least not much) source material for Auro, my interest is Atmos. What is the maximum number of Atmos channels that can CURRENTLY be driven by the 160. Audioguy, I just switched from the AV7702 to the MX 160, night and day difference. Also for all of you joining this thread there have been several discussion at the end of the MX 151 thread. One more problem, not sure what is causing it, but as of yesterday the MX 160 is not turning on the MC 8207.
Checked the connection everything is fine, don't know if it has anything to do with he Control4 remote. Since you said that you checked the connection and everything is fine, I am therefore assuming that the power control cable between the MX160 and MC8207 is still in place. That being the case, is the power switch on the MC8207 is the 'On' position or the 'Remote/Off' position? It should be in the 'Remote/Off' position.
If it still doesn't come on when the MX160 is turned on, try moving the position of the 'Auto Off' switch on the back of the MC8207 to the 'Disable' position. See Page 13 of the MC8207 owner's manual for more info on that. Hope this helps. Thanks John, yes the control cable is connected and the switch is set to remote. I will try your fix tonight, it has to be something simple.
One question for everyone with the MX 160, how long does it take for your unit to fully turn on, mine takes approximately 22 seconds, is that normal? You're welcome.
I am thinking the reset sequence for the Auto Off described in the MC8207 manual may do the trick. If that doesn't work, try unplugging the power cord from the rear of the MX160 for 15-20 seconds to reset its microprocessors. Yes, approximately 22 seconds is how long it takes my MX160 to fully turn on.
We set my Control4 driver to wait until 25 seconds after issuing the discrete 'Power On' command before sending an input change command to work around the long boot-up time. Good news / Bad news. Good news, last night I watched Mad Max Fury Road, where as the movie is pretty stupid, the special effects were great and the MX 160 sounded fantastic. The MX 160 brought out every possible sound and was incredibly clean, this is a great demo movie, little violent. Bad news, for some reason the 160 decided to shut down on me about 20 minutes into the movie, no clue why.
Mcintosh Mx 151
Everything else stayed on but not the 160. Turned it back on and tried to go to the menu on my tablet, the home screen would pop up but would not allow me to do anything on it, it was frozen. I rebooted the tablet but no luck.
